This free geoscientific technical forum on Wednesday 27 August will offer delegates the opportunity to reduce their exploration risk by accessing the latest world-class, pre-competitive geoscientific information from GeoScience Victoria.
Presentations made by GeoScience Victoria and the minerals, petroleum and energy industries will include new data, maps and other technical information. The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) Victorian Division is proudly supporting this event with members giving technical presentations on their Victorian mineral exploration and mining activities. The technical forum incorporates the popular Victorian Initiative for Minerals and Petroleum (VIMP) data release day, which is traditionally held by the Department of Primary Industries with industry once each year. VIMP funds geoscience to reduce your exploration risk and maximise your chance of discovery. During the Resources Victoria technical day, delegates can expect:

Geoscientist
Hot Dry Rocks Pty Ltd
Jim is a consultant with Hot Dry Rocks. Previously he worked for GeoScience Victoria for seven years. He is familiar with the implementation of the Victorian Government’s Geothermal Resources legislation to manage the exploration and extraction of Geothermal Energy. Jim is currently enrolled in a PhD at Monash University examining the tectonic and sedimentary geology of north-west Tasmania and is a member of PESA.

Louise Goldie-Divko
Geoscientist/Basin Analyst
GeoScience Victoria
Louise Goldie Divko is a geologist at GeoScience Victoria and is currently investigating the top seal integrity of the Lakes Entrance Formation in the Gippsland Basin. She has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Deakin University and a Diploma of Education from Melbourne University. Louise worked at Schlumberger GeoQuest for 3 years. Louise returned to Deakin University in 2003 and has recently submitted her PhD thesis which examined the sub-surface geology of the Kerang District in the Victorian Murray Basin.

Michael Harrison
Petroleum Geologist
GeoScience Victoria
Michael is a petroleum geoscientist who has been working for GeoScience Victoria for the past two years. He completed his Bachelor of Science in 2003 at Monash University and is currently completing his Master of Science part time (also at Monash University). His Masters project explores the tectonic development and structural evolution of the South Wanganui and Wairarapa Basins New Zealand, and is due to be completed by the end of 2008.

Emily House
Geologist
GeoScience Victoria
Emily graduated from La Trobe University with a Bachelor of Earth Science (Hons) in 2003. Emily was awarded the GSA Thomas Medal for best geological map associated with a Victorian geology honours thesis, after completing a mapping and geomorphology project on an area of the Dead Sea Plain in Jordan.
Emily has worked in the Resources section of GeoScience Victoria since 2004 on various regolith and geochemistry projects. She is currently project managing and working on Gold Undercover lithogeochemistry, HyLogging and the Lockington regolith geochemistry projects, as well as co-ordinating the Victorian section of the National Geochemistry Survey of Australia.

Megan Hough
Research Assistant
Monash University
Megan graduated from the University of Melbourne with a BSc (Hons) in 1996. In 1997 she joined the Australian Crustal Research Centre at Monash University, as a Research Assistant. In March 2005, Megan began her PhD research in collaboration with GeoScience Victoria and Goldstar Resources NL, on the application of 3D modelling in understanding the origin and genesis of gold mineralisation in the Woods Point – Walhalla gold region.

Vladimir Lisitsin
Geologist

Vladimir graduated with distinction from Kharkov State University (Ukraine) in 1994. He was involved in a number of exploration and research projects in Russia and Ukraine and moved to Australia in 2000.
Vladimir has been with GeoScience Victoria since 2002. His main projects have included 3D modelling and estimation of brown coal resources, QA of geological databases and geochemical data, research into the economic geology of gold, assessment of undiscovered mineral resources and prospectivity analysis.

Geoff O’Brien
Manager, Energy Geoscience
GeoScience Victoria
Dr Geoffrey O'Brien is the Manager of Energy Geoscience within GeoScience Victoria. He has worked in the petroleum exploration sector for over 20 years and has a First-Class Honours degree and PhD in Earth Sciences.
Geoff has worked for BHP, Western Mining Petroleum, AGSO/Geoscience Australia, the University of Adelaide and has consulted to a wide number of companies in Australia and overseas. Dr O’Brien’s key technical specialities include the application of integrated petroleum systems approaches to basin evaluation, with an emphasis on basin and migration modelling (1D, 2D and 3D), charge history analysis, remote sensing, fault and top seal analysis and seismic interpretation of hydrocarbon leakage and seepage. Dr O’Brien has won numerous industry awards and was the 1992 PESA Australia Lecturer; he has also published over 170 papers and abstracts.

Peter Tingate
Senior Geologist/Basin Analyst
GeoScience Victoria
Peter Tingate is a Senior Geologist with the Energy Geoscience Group at GeoScience Victoria. He works on the carbon dioxide sequestration potential of Victoria's sedimentary basins as well as their petroleum systems.
Peter received his BSc (Hon) and PhD from the University of Melbourne and worked at the Australian School of Petroleum (formerly NCPGG) until joining VicDPI in January this year. He has published papers on basin modelling, diagenesis of sedimentary rocks and geological storage of CO2 and is a member of PESA and AAPG.

Simon Holford
ARC Postdoctoral Fellow
Australian School of Petroleum
Dr Simon Holford is an ARC Australian Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian School of Petroleum working on Cenozoic uplift and deformation associated with the southern margin of Australia. He has a BSc(hons) from Keele University and a PhD from the University of Birmingham. His PhD study examined the Cenozoic tectonics of the British Isles using thermochronology, compaction and seismic data.

Chris Osbourne

Chris Osborne is a geologist with GeoScience Victoria (GSV). He completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at La Trobe University in 1997 and shortly after began his exciting career as a public servant within the regional mapping section of GSV. During his ten years with GSV he has helped produce regional geological maps and reports as well as being responsible for developing and implementing digital field data capture systems.
More recently he has begun building up his knowledge of constructing 3D geological models as part of mapping projects and also developing a strategy for managing 3D geological models within GSV.

Ross Cayley
Senior Geologist
GeoScience Victoria
Ross graduated with Honours in Geology from Melbourne University in 1988. Chris Wilson supervised his project on the structural geology of the Mt Ararat region in western Victoria, and pointed Ross off in the direction of a career in structural geology (interrupted periodically by climbing, skiing and mountainbiking etc.).
Ross began work at the Geological Survey of Victoria in 1990. During the 1990s, the majority of his projects were in western Victoria, with key results including recognition of the Moyston Fault as a major craton-directed thrust and the terrane boundary between the Delamerian and Lachlan Orogens, definition of the Moornambool Metamorphic Complex, and recognition of a fold-and-thrust belt in the Grampians Ranges.
Since 2000, Ross has worked in larger GSV project teams across Victoria, and has contributed to several books on Victoria’s geology. Some key results (for example the ‘Selwyn Block’ concept linking Tasmanian and Victorian geology) have been published in Australian and international journals. Ross is currently involved in the interpretation of deep seismic transect data across central Victoria and it’s implications for the geological evolution and mineral endowment, and in updating regional-scale geological databases. |

David Moore

David has worked for about 40 years as a geologist in mining and exploration and for governments. Over the last 20 years he has been interpreting geophysical data in geologically meaningful ways, with a particular emphasis on highlighting potentially prospective areas. For the last 13 years he has been with GeoScience Victoria, working mainly on western and central Victoria interpreting the Palaeozoic basement under the Murray Basin.

Tim Rawling

Dr Tim Rawling is a structural geologist with over 10 years experience in application of 3D modelling and computer based simulation techniques to geological problems. He has previously worked on oscillating modes of orogenesis in the SW Pacific region and the structural controls on orogenic gold deposition in Victoria and is currently managing GeoScience Victoria's Rediscover Victoria 3D project.

Adele Seymon
Geologist
GeoScience Victoria
Adele has a BSc (Hons) from Monash University, and a Diploma of Business (Frontline Management) from the Mt Eliza Centre for Executive Education. She began her career working as an exploration geologist in Western Australia, predominantly on regional gold and nickel exploration programs. Adele also worked on near mine nickel exploration at the Silver Swan nickel mine.
During the downturn, Adele spent two years working as a research assistant for a broking firm (supporting the Banks/Finance and Energy/Utilities teams) before joining the GeoScience Victoria. Here she is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies to better understand (base metal) mineralisation in Victoria.

Clive Willman
Geologist
GeoScience Victoria
Clive is a geologist with more than 28 years experience in industry and government, mainly in Victoria. He has worked on several gold exploration programs in Victoria and North America and was a mine geologist at the Wattle Gully Mine in the early 1980s.
Since 1989, Clive has worked for the Geological Survey of Victoria (now GeoScience Victoria) principally as a regional mapper in eastern Victoria and the Bendigo and Castlemaine goldfields. He now specialises in mineral resources. Clive has contributed to several books on Victoria’s geology, has published scientific papers in Australian and international journals and in recent years has branched out into producing educational films highlighting Victoria’s geology and geological research. He has a BSc (Hons) and Masters in geology.

Dennis Arne
Principal Consultant - Geochemistry

Dr. Dennis Arne has more than 25 years experience in geochemical research, both in Canada and Australia. Areas of interest include lithogeochemistry, biogeochemistry, soil geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and thermochronology. He has also been involved in teaching both applied geochemistry and economic geology at the University of Ballarat and the Western Australian School of Mines, and is co-author of a number of journal articles on the geochemistry of Victorian gold deposits.
In recent years, Dennis has been involved as a consultant in the development of geochemical programs for gold exploration, has undertaken a number of environmental soil and water assessments, and was formerly Senior Geochemist with GeoScience Victoria. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientist and a Registered Professional Geoscientist (Geochemistry). Dennis currently splits his time between ioGlobal where he works as a Principal Consultant (Geochemistry) and managing regional exploration for Synergy Metals Ltd in eastern Victoria.

Geoff Turner
Registered Professional Geoscientist - Mineral Exploration

Geoff Turner is a Registered Professional Geologist with the Australian Institute of Geoscientists. He served as a Councillor to that Institute from 2002 to 2007, and is presently on the Recognised Overseas Professional Organisations (ROPO) Taskforce, a sub-committee of the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) which assesses and makes recommendations on the suitability of overseas professional organisations to be recognised by the ASX. His academic qualifications included a BSc (Geol) from Adelaide University and a MSc (Exploration & Mining Geology) from James Cook University.
He has over 30 years experience in mineral exploration during which time he held senior exploration management positions in West Australia and Victoria, principally in gold exploration, and now operates through his exploration management company, Exploration Management Services Pty Ltd.
Geoff’s experience includes regional assessment to identify potential mineralisation models, the development and management of exploration programs to confirm mineralisation hypothesis and the establishment and management of programs to define and test exploration targets. Recent exploration program successes under Geoff’s direction include the discovery of gold-copper mineralisation in Jamieson district of eastern Victoria and the more recent discovery of gold mineralisation under more than 70 meters of cover in north-central Victoria for Gold Fields Australasia. Geoff is also experienced in mineral resource estimation in a wide variety of gold deposit styles.

John Collier

John graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science degree with honours. He started his geological career in base metals working on such deposits as Broken Hill and Olympic Dam. John has since moved into the gold sector and is now Senior Resource Geologist at Bendigo Mining. At Bendigo, he has helped in the discovery of new reef systems and the creation of a score card system for grade estimation.

Peter has been involved in mineral exploration for more than thirty five years since graduating from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. For the past twenty-two years Peter has been at the public interface of drilling in a tight urban environment, blending the needs of effective exploration drilling with the standards of community amenity.
Peter is the Senior Project geologist with LGL Ballarat Goldfields in Ballarat.

Jeff Marvin

Jeff is responsible for managing the development of Exploration Licence 4416, an area comprising approximately 3,680 square kilometres in the Gippsland Basin. The company's activities include coal seam gas and mineral sands exploration and the development of substantial surface brown coal deposits.
Prior to relocating to Australia in 2001, Jeff enjoyed over a 20 year career within the US financial market system, holding various institutional trading positions specialising in equity and derivative trading as well as managing private investment partnerships.

Neil Martin

Neil has more than 20 years experience in the mineral exploration industry with a particular emphasis on volcanic terrains and VHMS deposits. He completed his PhD at the University of Tasmania in 2004, and has worked in most parts of Australia and also in western Mongolia.
Neil commenced with Jabiru Metals in 2005, and as Exploration Manager is currently responsible for the management and development of Jabiru’s exploration projects in Western Australia and Victoria.

Vince Morand

Dr Vince Morand obtained a PhD at the University of Sydney, followed by post-doctoral research at Monash University on the Omeo Metamorphic Complex, NE Victoria, and at James Cook University on the northern New England Fold Belt. Both these projects focussed on structural, metamorphic and tectonic studies.
After several years lecturing in geology at Ballarat University, he joined the Geological Survey of Victoria (as it was called then) in 1997. While at GSV he has worked on mapping projects in western, central and eastern Victoria. |

John Smart

Donald Mineral Sands
John worked for the CRA/Rio Tinto subsidiary, Wimmera Industrial Minerals, from 1987 to 1998. Prior to this he worked with the Bureau of Mineral Resources on regional geological mapping and for Comalco and other mining companies. Since 2000 he has been a director of Goldfields Revegetation, engaged in revegetation and other environmental activities, together with some geological consulting.

Peter Thompson

Peter has recently been appointed as the General Manager – Exploration for Beaconsfield Gold NL, with a mandate to accelerate the company’s exploration programs in Tasmania and western Victoria. Peter has gained extensive and relevant experience in both exploration and mining during a successful career of twenty years, most recently with St Barbara Limited.
Since graduating with an honours degree in geology from Trinity College, Dublin, he has held senior exploration roles with Jubilee Mines NL, Anaconda Nickel Ltd and Western Mining Corporation. He also holds a Masters in Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology from Leicester University. |
